If the Church is to fulfil its mission to proclaim the truth of Christ to all peoples, it must use its “creative intelligence” to meet the challenges of the digital age.
Pope Benedict said this when he met with the participants of the plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for Culture, held last week. The theme of the gathering was “the Culture of Communication and New Languages”.
With the new forms of communication, the Pope said, a cultural transformation is under way and the Church cannot remain indifferent.
She wants to dialogue with everyone in the pursuit of truth, he added, and in order to do that she must be on the same frequency, in friendly and sincere environments.
He offered the Gospel as the guide to reaching the digital age and noted that the Church can draw on “her extraordinary patrimony of symbols, images and gestures”. The Christian tradition has always been closely linked to the liturgy and to the language of art, he added, the beauty of which has its special communicative power.
